W Hotel Austin

Hicks nears completion on the W Hotel in Austin.

The project will contain 25,000 square feet of retail space, a 2,200 seat theatre for the Austin City Limits studio. Austin City Limits currently has a facility north of downtown on the UT Campus which can hold 320 seats.
The project will include 250 luxury hotel rooms and 196 condominiums.  It will also be the new home of the Austin Children's Museum. The new facility will have 30,000 square feet, 10,000 square feet more than its current home.
There will be a 30 foot wide television screen over the plaza which will show live broadcasts of Austin City Limits.
The project will feature a 10,000 square foot public plaza on the east side of the building on the corner of Lavaca Street and West 2nd Street.
Originally proposed with 15 floors, the height was increased to 32 when a hotel came to the project.
This project is being planned where a proposal in the 1980s called for a new home in a 14-story central tower for the Austin City Hall Central Tower which was never built.  Visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEBSl7bCBi8 for a time lapse video of the project.
